Queen’s Marque: A Distinctly Atlantic Canadian Development
At the edge of Halifax Harbour, Queen’s Marque stands as a distinctive mixed-use development celebrating Atlantic Canada’s rich heritage. Spearheaded by Armour Group Ltd. and Develop Nova Scotia, this progressive site merges sustainability and modern design. Its innovative District Energy Plant utilizes the sea for heating and cooling, cutting energy costs and reducing the carbon footprint by 50%—a first for Atlantic Canada.
Among Queen’s Marque’s standout spaces is the rooftop terrace of Stewart McKelvey, designed by Fathom Studio. This eco-conscious law firm occupies four floors of the commercial building and envisioned the terrace as a dual-purpose oasis: a serene space for employees by day and a sophisticated venue for client events in the evenings. Maglin’s Foro and ALUM Collections were chosen to outfit the terrace, offering flexible, social seating that aligns with the clean, modern aesthetic of the space.
Durability was paramount in selecting outdoor furniture for the often-windy oceanside environment. The crisp, matte white powder-coated tables, chairs, and stools not only withstand the elements but also reduce overheating under the summer sun. Their sleek design integrates seamlessly with the natural materials and stunning ocean views, creating a functional and stylish outdoor retreat.
“The design needed to have a simple, clean aesthetic, be comfortable, and be heavy enough to withstand the winds… After a few years, the product still looks new,” said Doug Boudreau, Stewart McKelvey’s Director of Administration. The resulting terrace provides a crisply designed, innovative space for the employees and clients of Stewart McKelvey to gather at the intersection of work and leisure.
