Fritz Hedges Waterway Park makes a splash in Seattle
Opened in fall 2020 at the base of the University of Washington campus, the award-winning 3.5-acre Fritz Hedges Waterway Park transformed a degraded industrial site into a vibrant public space on Portage Bay. Designed by landscape architecture firm Walker Macy, the park combines environmental restoration with recreational amenities. It features a salmon-friendly shoreline, a kayak launch, a pier, and a meadow of native wildflowers and grasses, reconnecting the University District to the water while celebrating the area’s cultural history.
Named after Frederick “Fritz” Hedges, a dedicated Seattle Parks and Recreation professional, the park reflects his belief in the vital role of parks in urban life. With its open, south-facing views, the space invites visitors to relax, enjoy their lunch, or read a book while taking in panoramic waterfront scenery. This peaceful retreat has already garnered accolades for its contribution to community wellness and the environment.
To encourage year-round use, Maglin’s 720 Chairs were chosen in bold yellow, adding warmth and vibrancy even on Seattle’s grayest days.
