Elevated Design
The University of Chicago, known for its architectural highlights and renowned alumni, transformed an open space in the Crerar Science Quadrangle into a bold artistic installation. Associate Director for Campus Environment Richard Bumstead, with 35 years of experience as the university’s landscape architect, envisioned two immense concentric circles of light suspended in mid-air. Designed to inspire awe and reflection, the project required custom solutions and trusted collaborators to bring the vision to life.
Bumstead and Project Manager Kathleen Golomb partnered with Maglin Site Furniture and Jacobs/Ryan Associates—both known for their reliability and creativity. Maglin’s Modified and Original Products (Custom) division worked closely with engineers, architects, contractors, and lighting specialists over eight months to create the one-of-a-kind installation. Regular site visits, supplier meetings, and daily updates ensured the project stayed on time and within budget. Maglin’s Product Manager, Kelly Nettleton, noted, “Solid business relationships were key to bringing Bumstead’s vision to fruition.”
On June 21, 2018, the University of Chicago hosted an illumination ceremony to celebrate the project’s completion. Guests toured the campus, met the project team, and admired the breathtaking centerpiece of the event—the illuminated circles hovering above the quadrangle.
This innovative installation now serves as a lasting reminder to scholars, faculty, and visitors to cultivate bold ideas, build strong partnerships, and pursue new heights, reflecting the university’s commitment to pushing boundaries and inspiring excellence.
