An adaptive reuse model of creativity and innovation
Once a site of automobile and missile manufacturing, Camp North End in Charlotte has transformed into a vibrant hub for start-ups, artists, chefs, and the community. ATCO Properties & Management acquired the 76-acre property in 2016, reimagining it as a creative campus that opened in 2017. With over 40 tenants, Camp North End balances its industrial heritage with modern innovation, offering attractions like public art, retail, events, and inspired office spaces.
Central to ATCO’s vision is fostering health, happiness, and productivity for tenants and visitors. This commitment earned Camp North End one of the first Fitwel Community Design Certifications in North America, recognizing its wellness-focused environment. The site integrates indoor and outdoor spaces designed to improve well-being, making it a standout destination for work and leisure.
Maglin’s Pixel seating structures play a key role in activating the outdoor spaces at Camp North End. Bold turquoise and Ipe wood Pixel block configurations near the Gama Goat Building provide tiered seating for live music and socializing, while ivory Pixel installations between office buildings offer tranquil spots for employees to recharge.
Working hand-in-hand with the Maglin team, the placemakers at Camp North End participated in designing these elements to achieve their creative vision. The design process consisted of a live, collaborative session in the Maglin Product Builder (an online configuration tool that renders unique designs in 3D; creating a live visual experience as the product is built) to craft seating that serves as a design focal point and a place to congregate and sit.
