Maglin Discontinues Ipe Wood: A Commitment to Sustainable Sourcing

Maglin Site Furniture is committed to responsible material sourcing and sustainability. As part of this commitment, we have made the decision to discontinue the use of Ipe wood in our products, effective immediately (February 10, 2025).

Why We’ve Made this Decision

Ipe has recently been added to CITES Appendix II (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora) which regulates its trade to prevent overexploitation and ensure long-term viability. Increased restrictions on its harvesting and international trade now require stringent documentation to verify sustainable sourcing. These regulations protect tropical hardwoods from illegal logging and deforestation, but they also create complexities in supply chains that are leading to import delays and uncertainty.

That’s why we’re taking a proactive stance: phasing out Ipe in favor of more sustainable wood options.

Thermally Modified Wood

To provide high-performance, durable wood options while upholding our environmental responsibility, Maglin offers Thermal Ash and Thermal Oak.

Sourced from domestic forests and NHLA Sustainability Certified, these hardwoods undergo a chemical-free process involving heat and steam that enhances their strength, stability, and resistance to moisture, pests, and decay. This process also deepens their color, creating a rich, natural finish that will gracefully weather to a silvery-grey patina over time.

Both options offer outstanding resilience for outdoor environments while supporting sustainable forestry practices. Our Thermal Woods are sourced from domestic forests, and processed in North America, reducing the carbon footprint associated with long-distance transportation.

Got questions? Curious about our Thermal Woods? Want to see (and feel) the quality for yourself? We’ve got you covered. We’re always happy to chat, send samples, and help you find the perfect fit for your project.
